Ajumma

Meet Mrs. Oh, our ajumma. Ajumma literally means "auntie," but it is used in Korea as a term of respect, as a generic term for getting the attention of middle-aged female shopkeepers, and in this context, as a term for nanny/housekeeper. Mrs. Oh has been with us since shortly after we arrived. Ajumma service is one of the perks of a Nike Korea assignment. Mrs. Oh comes one full day and one or two afternoons a week to clean, do laundry, and sit with Vivi when I want to go out. Vivi is getting to know Mrs. Oh, and smiles when she sees her. Before long she and Mrs. Oh will be good friends. Thank goodness for Mrs. Oh!
