I'm a big girl now

Homesick on this day of days

I'm so bloody homesick. It doesn't happen very often, but this week has been a doozy (and its only Tuesday night!). First it was my friend Kirsten's blog post that had me sniffling all day long. Then today is was an entire weekend's worth of news coverage on NPR (though Car Talk, as usual, didn't make me cry). And tonight, its a re-run of the inaugural concert on HBO that has me wishing that we weren't so far from home right now. I was in Korea for election day, and for the next couple of days, people who didn't know a single word of English were high-fiving me and cheering "Obama!" I felt like our victory was everyone's victory, all over the world, and that to be an American was to be a citizen of the world. Here in China, though, I don't see any evidence of awareness of the big shift that has happened back home. Maybe I'll see it tomorrow, but...maybe not. Regardless, I was to say that right now, with the inauguration of Obama only hours away (3 am my time, specifically)...

I AM SO PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN

I AM SO PROUD OF MY COUNTRYMEN

I AM SO HOPEFUL.

I know what you mean, Kiley. I really ached to join the party and share the joy of Election Day and Inauguration Day with fellow Americans. Finally proud again ^_^

It is such a damned relief to be proud again of this country, to be hopeful we can undo some of the international damage that seemed so irreparable not that long ago. Ah, the speech was lovely. His and Michelle Obama's actions toward McCain and Hillary Clinton, lovely. I got to explain to Clara today what it means to cry tears of joy.
